Sourate 23 : Les croyants (Al-miminune)

n1Sourate d'après l'hégire (Coran médinois)

Au nom de Dieu, le Tout Miséricordieux, le Très Miséricordieux.

Bismi Allāhi Ar-Raĥmāni Ar-Raĥīmi

In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

  1. Bienheureux sont certes les croyants,

    Qad 'Aflaĥa Al-Mu'uminūna

    Successful indeed are the believers:

  2. ceux qui sont humbles dans leur Salat,

    ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ فِى صَلَاتِهِمْ خَٰشِعُونَ

    Al-Ladhīna Hum Fī Şalātihim Khāshi`ūna

    those who humble themselves in prayer;

  3. qui se détournent des futilités,

    وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَنِ ٱللَّغْوِ مُعْرِضُونَ

    Wa Al-Ladhīna Hum `Ani Al-Laghwi Mu`riđūna

    those who avoid idle talk;

  4. qui s'acquittent de la Zakat,

    وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِلزَّكَوٰةِ فَٰعِلُونَ

    Wa Al-Ladhīna Hum Lilzzakāati Fā`ilūna

    those who pay alms-tax n2 Zakâh means purification and growth. Paying alms-tax and charity are forms of purifying one’s wealth.;

    Wa Al-Ladhīna Hum Lifurūjihim Ĥāfižūna

those who guard their chastity n3lit., private parts.

  6. si ce n'est qu'avec leurs épouses ou les esclaves qu'ils possèdent, car là vraiment, on ne peut les blâmer ;

    إِلَّا عَلَىٰٓ أَزْوَٰجِهِمْ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَٰنُهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ غَيْرُ مَلُومِينَ

'Illā `Alá 'Azwājihim 'W Mā Malakat 'Aymānuhum Fa'innahum Ghayru Malūmīna

except with their wives or those ˹bondwomen˺ in their possession n4A bondwoman is a female slave that a man owned either through purchase or taking her captive in war—a common ancient practice in many parts of the world. Islam opened the door for ending slavery by making it an act of charity to free slaves. Many sins (such as breaking one’s oath, unintentional killing, and intercourse with one’s wife during the day of fasting in Ramaḍân) can be atoned by freeing a slave. According to Islamic teachings, no free person can be enslaved. Islam also improved the condition of slaves. It was unlawful to separate a mother from her child. Children born to a slave-master were deemed free, and their mother would gain her freedom upon the death of her master. With regards to slaves, Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ) says, “Feed them from what you eat, clothe them from what you wear, and do not overwhelm them with work unless you assist them.” He (ﷺ) also says, “Whoever kills his slave will be killed and whoever injures his slave will be injured.” In recent times, slavery has been outlawed in all countries—including the Muslim world., for then they are free from blame,

  7. alors que ceux qui cherchent au-delà de ces limites sont des transgresseurs ;

    فَمَنِ ٱبْتَغَىٰ وَرَآءَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْعَادُونَ

    Famani Abtaghá Warā'a Dhālika Fa'ūlā'ika Humu Al-`Ādūna

    but whoever seeks beyond that are the transgressors;

    وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِأَمَٰنَٰتِهِمْ وَعَهْدِهِمْ رَٰعُونَ

    Wa Al-Ladhīna Hum Li'mānātihim Wa `Ahdihim Rā`ūna

    ˹the believers are also˺ those who are true to their trusts and covenants;

  9. et qui observent strictement leur Salat.

Wa Al-Ladhīna Hum `Alá Şalawātihim Yuĥāfižūna

and those who are ˹properly˺ observant of their prayers.

  10. Ce sont eux les héritiers,

    'Ūlā'ika Humu Al-Wārithūna

These are the ones who will be awarded

Al-Ladhīna Yarithūna Al-Firdawsa Hum Fīhā Khālidūna

Paradise as their own n5 Al-Firdaws, the highest place in Paradise.. They will be there forever.

Wa Laqad Khalaqnā Al-'Insāna Min Sulālatin Min Ţīnin

And indeed, We created humankind n6Adam (ﷺ) from an extract of clay,

Thumma Ja`alnāhu Nuţfatan Fī Qarārin Makīnin

then placed each ˹human˺ as a sperm-drop n7Nuṭfah refers to the union of male and female gametes (sperm and egg) which results in the zygote after fertilization. in a secure place,

Thumma Khalaqnā An-Nuţfata `Alaqatan Fakhalaqnā Al-`Alaqata Muđghatan Fakhalaqnā Al-Muđghata `Ižāmāan Fakasawnā Al-`Ižāma Laĥmāan Thumma 'Ansha'nāhu Khalqāan 'Ākhara Fatabāraka Allāhu 'Aĥsanu Al-Khāliqīna

then We developed the drop into a clinging clot, then developed the clot into a lump ˹of flesh˺, then developed the lump into bones, then clothed the bones with flesh, then We brought it into being as a new creation n9This happens when the spirit is breathed into the embryo. So Blessed is Allah, the Best of Creators.

  15. Et puis, après cela, vous mourrez.

    Thumma 'Innakum Ba`da Dhālika Lamayyitūna

After that you will surely die,

    Thumma 'Innakum Yawma Al-Qiyāmati Tub`athūna

then on the Day of Judgment you will be resurrected.

Wa Laqad Khalaqnā Fawqakum Sab`a Ţarā'iqa Wa Mā Kunnā `Ani Al-Khalqi Ghāfilīna

And indeed, We created above you seven levels ˹of heaven˺. We are never unmindful of ˹Our˺ creation.

Wa 'Anzalnā Mina As-Samā'i Mā'an Biqadarin Fa'askannāhu Fī Al-'Arđi Wa 'Innā `Alá Dhahābin Bihi Laqādirūna

We send down rain from the sky in perfect measure, causing it to soak into the earth. And We are surely able to take it away.

Fa'ansha'nā Lakum Bihi Jannātin Min Nakhīlin Wa 'A`nābin Lakum Fīhā Fawākihu Kathīratun Wa Minhā Ta'kulūna

With it, We produce for you gardens of palm trees and grapevines, in which there are abundant fruits, and from which you may eat,

Wa Shajaratan Takhruju Min Ţūri Saynā'a Tanbutu Bid-Duhni Wa Şibghin Lil'ākilīna

as well as ˹olive˺ trees which grow at Mount Sinai, providing oil and a condiment to eat.

Wa 'Inna Lakum Fī Al-'An`āmi La`ibratan Nusqīkum Mimmā Fī Buţūnihā Wa Lakum Fīhā Manāfi`u Kathīratun Wa Minhā Ta'kulūna

And there is certainly a lesson for you in cattle, from whose bellies We give you ˹milk˺ to drink, and in them are many other benefits for you, and from them you may eat.

    Wa `Alayhā Wa `Alá Al-Fulki Tuĥmalūna

And you are carried upon ˹some of˺ them and upon ships.

Wa Laqad 'Arsalnā Nūĥāan 'Ilá Qawmihi Faqāla Yā Qawmi A`budū Allāha Mā Lakum Min 'Ilahin Ghayruhu 'Afalā Tattaqūna

Indeed, We sent Noah to his people. He declared, “O my people! Worship Allah ˹alone˺. You have no god other than Him. Will you not then fear ˹Him˺?”

Faqāla Al-Mala'u Al-Ladhīna Kafarū Min Qawmihi Mā Hādhā 'Illā Basharun Mithlukum Yurīdu 'An Yatafađđala `Alaykum Wa Law Shā'a Allāhu La'anzala Malā'ikatan Mā Sami`nā Bihadhā Fī 'Ābā'inā Al-'Awwalīna

But the disbelieving chiefs of his people said ˹to the masses˺, “This is only a human like you, who wants to be superior to you. Had Allah willed, He could have easily sent down angels ˹instead˺. We have never heard of this in ˹the history of˺ our forefathers.

'In Huwa 'Illā Rajulun Bihi Jinnatun Fatarabbaşū Bihi Ĥattá Ĥīnin

He is simply insane, so bear with him for a while.” n10So he may recover from his “madness” or die.

  26. Il dit : Seigneur ! Apporte-moi secours parce qu'ils me traitent de menteur.

    Qāla Rabbi Anşurnī Bimā Kadhabūni

Noah prayed, “My Lord! Help me, because they have denied ˹me˺.”

Fa'awĥaynā 'Ilayhi 'Ani Aşna`i Al-Fulka Bi'a`yuninā Wa Waĥyinā Fa'idhā Jā'a 'Amrunā Wa Fāra At-Tannūru Fāsluk Fīhā Min Kullin Zawjayni Athnayni Wa 'Ahlaka 'Illā Man Sabaqa `Alayhi Al-Qawlu Minhum Wa Lā Tukhāţibnī Fī Al-Ladhīna Žalamū 'Innahum Mughraqūna

So We inspired him: “Build the Ark under Our ˹watchful˺ Eyes and directions. Then when Our command comes and the oven bursts ˹with water˺,1 take on board a pair from every species along with your family—except those against whom the decree ˹to drown˺ has already been passed. And do not plead with Me for those who have done wrong, for they will surely be drowned.”

    Fa'idhā Astawayta 'Anta Wa Man Ma`aka `Alá Al-Fulki Faquli Al-Ĥamdu Lillāhi Al-Ladhī Najjānā Mina Al-Qawmi Až-Žālimīna

Then when you and those with you have settled in the Ark, say, “All praise is for Allah, Who saved us from the wrongdoing people.”

Wa Qul Rabbi 'Anzilnī Munzalāan Mubārakāan Wa 'Anta Khayru Al-Munzilīna

And pray, My Lord! Allow me a blessed landing, for You are the best accommodator.

  30. Voilà bien là des signes. Nous sommes certes Celui qui éprouve.

'Inna Fī Dhālika La'āyātin Wa 'In Kunnā Lamubtalīna

Surely in this are lessons n11lit., signs. . And We ˹always˺ put ˹people˺ to the test.

  31. Puis, après eux, Nous avons créé d'autres générations,

Thumma 'Ansha'nā Min Ba`dihim Qarnāan 'Ākharīna

Then We raised another generation after them,

Fa'arsalnā Fīhim Rasūlāan Minhum 'Ani A`budū Allāha Mā Lakum Min 'Ilahin Ghayruhu 'Afalā Tattaqūna

and sent to them a messenger from among themselves, ˹declaring,˺ Worship Allah ˹alone˺. You have no god other than Him. Will you not then fear ˹Him˺?

Wa Qāla Al-Mala'u Min Qawmihi Al-Ladhīna Kafarū Wa Kadhabū Biliqā'i Al-'Ākhirati Wa 'Atrafnāhum Fī Al-Ĥayāati Ad-Dunyā Mā Hādhā 'Illā Basharun Mithlukum Ya'kulu Mimmā Ta'kulūna Minhu Wa Yashrabu Mimmā Tashrabūna

But the chiefs of his people—who disbelieved, denied the meeting ˹with Allah˺ in the Hereafter, and were spoiled by the worldly luxuries We had provided for them—said ˹to the masses˺, “This is only a human like you. He eats what you eat, and drinks what you drink.

Wa La'in 'Aţa`tum Basharāan Mithlakum 'Innakum 'Idhāan Lakhāsirūna

And if you ˹ever˺ obey a human like yourselves, then you would certainly be losers.

'Aya`idukum 'Annakum 'Idhā Mittum Wa Kuntum Turābāan Wa `Ižāmāan 'Annakum Mukhrajūna

Does he promise you that once you are dead and reduced to dust and bones, you will be brought forth ˹alive˺?

  36. Loin, loin, ce qu'on vous promet !

    Hayhāta Hayhāta Limā Tū`adūna

Impossible, simply impossible is what you are promised!

'In Hiya 'Illā Ĥayātunā Ad-Dunyā Namūtu Wa Naĥyā Wa Mā Naĥnu Bimab`ūthīna

There is nothing beyond our worldly life. We die, others are born, and none will be resurrected.

'In Huwa 'Illā Rajulun Aftará `Alá Allāhi Kadhibāan Wa Mā Naĥnu Lahu Bimu'uminīna

He is no more than a man who has fabricated a lie about Allah, and we will never believe in him.”

  39. Il dit : Seigneur ! Apporte-moi secours parce qu'ils me traitent de menteur.

    Qāla Rabbi Anşurnī Bimā Kadhabūni

The messenger prayed, My Lord! Help me, because they have denied ˹me˺.

    Qāla `Ammā Qalīlin Layuşbiĥunna Nādimīna

Allah responded, “Soon they will be truly regretful.”

    Fa'akhadhat/humu Aş-Şayĥatu Bil-Ĥaqqi Faja`alnāhum Ghuthā'an Fabu`dāan Lilqawmi Až-Žālimīna

Then the ˹mighty˺ blast overtook them with justice, and We reduced them to rubble. So away with the wrongdoing people!

  42. Puis, après eux Nous avons créé d'autres générations.

Thumma 'Ansha'nā Min Ba`dihim Qurūnāan 'Ākharīna

Then We raised other generations after them.

Mā Tasbiqu Min 'Ummatin 'Ajalahā Wa Mā Yasta'khirūna

No people can advance their doom, nor can they delay it.

Thumma 'Arsalnā Rusulanā Tatrā Kulla Mā Jā'a 'Ummatan Rasūluhā Kadhabūhu Fa'atba`nā Ba`đahum Ba`đāan Wa Ja`alnāhum 'Aĥādītha Fabu`dāan Liqawmin Lā Yu'uminūna

Then We sent Our messengers in succession: whenever a messenger came to his people, they denied him. So We destroyed them, one after the other, reducing them to ˹cautionary˺ tales. So away with the people who refuse to believe!

Thumma 'Arsalnā Mūsá Wa 'Akhāhu Hārūna Bi'āyātinā Wa Sulţānin Mubīnin

Then We sent Moses and his brother Aaron with Our signs1 and compelling proof

'Ilá Fir`awna Wa Mala'ihi Fāstakbarū Wa Kānū Qawmāan `Ālīna

to Pharaoh and his chiefs, but they behaved arrogantly and were a tyrannical people.

Faqālū 'Anu'uminu Libasharayni Mithlinā Wa Qawmuhumā Lanā `Ābidūna

They argued, Will we believe in two humans, like ourselves, whose people are slaves to us?

    Fakadhabūhumā Fakānū Mina Al-Muhlakīna

So they rejected them both, and ˹so˺ were among those destroyed.

Wa Laqad 'Ātaynā Mūsá Al-Kitāba La`allahum Yahtadūna

And We certainly gave Moses the Scripture, so perhaps his people would be ˹rightly˺ guided.

Wa Ja`alnā Abna Maryama Wa 'Ummahu 'Āyatan Wa 'Āwaynāhumā 'Ilá Rabwatin Dhāti Qarārin Wa Ma`īnin

And We made the son of Mary and his mother a sign, and gave them refuge on high ground—a ˹suitable˺ place for rest with flowing water.

Yā 'Ayyuhā Ar-Rusulu Kulū Mina Aţ-Ţayyibāti Wa A`malū Şāliĥāan 'Innī Bimā Ta`malūna `Alīmun

O messengers! Eat from what is good and lawful, and act righteously. Indeed, I fully know what you do.

Wa 'Inna Hadhihi 'Ummatukum 'Ummatan Wāĥidatan Wa 'Anā Rabbukum Fa Attaqūni

Surely this religion of yours is ˹only˺ one, and I am your Lord, so fear Me ˹alone˺.

Fataqaţţa`ū 'Amrahum Baynahum Zuburāan Kullu Ĥizbin Bimā Ladayhim Fariĥūna

Yet the people have divided it into different sects, each rejoicing in what they have.

    Fadharhum Fī Ghamratihim Ĥattá Ĥīnin

So leave them ˹O Prophet˺ in their heedlessness for a while.

'Ayaĥsabūna 'Annamā Numidduhum Bihi Min Mālin Wa Banīna

Do they think, since We provide them with wealth and children,

    Nusāri`u Lahum Fī Al-Khayrāti Bal Lā Yash`urūna

that We hasten to ˹honour˺ them ˹with˺ all kinds of good? No! They are not aware.

'Inna Al-Ladhīna Hum Min Khashyati Rabbihim Mushfiqūna

Surely those who tremble in awe of their Lord,

  58. qui croient aux versets de leur Seigneur,

    Wa Al-Ladhīna Hum Bi'āyāti Rabbihim Yu'uminūna

and who believe in the revelations of their Lord,

  59. qui n'associent rien à leur Seigneur,

Wa Al-Ladhīna Hum Birabbihim Lā Yushrikūna

and who associate none with their Lord,

Wa Al-Ladhīna Yu'utūna Mā 'Ātaw Wa Qulūbuhum Wa Jilatun 'Annahum 'Ilá Rabbihim Rāji`ūna

and who do whatever ˹good˺ they do with their hearts fearful, ˹knowing˺ that they will return to their Lord n12 It is reported in an authentic narration collected by At-Tirmiⱬi that ’Ȃishah, the Prophet’s wife, asked him (ﷺ) if this verse refers to those who steal or drink ˹alcohol˺. The Prophet (ﷺ) answered, “No, it refers to those who pray, fast, and donate, but are afraid that their deeds are rejected because they are not good enough.” Then he (ﷺ) recited the last part of the verse: “It is they who race to do good deeds, always taking the lead.”

'Ūlā'ika Yusāri`ūna Fī Al-Khayrāti Wa Hum Lahā Sābiqūna

it is they who race to do good deeds, always taking the lead.

Wa Lā Nukallifu Nafsāan 'Illā Wus`ahā Wa Ladaynā Kitābun Yanţiqu Bil-Ĥaqqi Wa Hum Lā Yužlamūn

We never require of any soul more than what it can afford. And with Us is a record which speaks the truth. None will be wronged.

Bal Qulūbuhum Fī Ghamratin Min Hādhā Wa Lahum 'A`mālun Min Dūni Dhālika Hum Lahā `Āmilūna

But the hearts of those ˹who disbelieve˺ are oblivious to ˹all of˺ this n13This refers to the believers’ good deeds mentioned in 23:57-62. , and they have other ˹evil˺ deeds, opposite to this, in which they are engrossed.

Ĥattá 'Idhā 'Akhadhnā Mutrafīhim Bil-`Adhābi 'Idhā Hum Yaj'arūna

But as soon as We seize their elite with torment, they start to cry for help.

  65. ‹Ne criez pas aujourd'hui. Nul ne vous protégera contre Nous.

Lā Taj'arū Al-Yawma 'Innakum Minnā Lā Tunşarūna

˹They will be told,˺ “Do not cry for help today. Surely you will never be saved from Us.

Qad Kānat 'Āyātī Tutlá `Alaykum Fakuntum `Alá 'A`qābikum Tankişūna

Indeed, My revelations were recited to you, but you used to back away ˹in disgust˺,

    Mustakbirīna Bihi Sāmirāan Tahjurūna

boasting of the Sacred House, and babbling ˹nonsense about the Quran˺ by night.”

    'Afalam Yaddabbarū Al-Qawla 'Am Jā'ahum Mā Lam Ya'ti 'Ābā'ahumu Al-'Awwalīna

Is it because they have never contemplated the Word ˹of Allah˺? Or ˹because˺ there has come to them something that did not come to their forefathers?

'Am Lam Ya`rifū Rasūlahum Fahum Lahu Munkirūna

Or ˹because˺ they failed to recognize their Messenger, and so they denied him?

'Am Yaqūlūna Bihi Jinnatun Bal Jā'ahum Bil-Ĥaqqi Wa 'Aktharuhum Lilĥaqqi Kārihūna

Or ˹because˺ they say, “He is insane?” In fact, he has come to them with the truth, but most of them are resentful of the truth.

Wa Lawi Attaba`a Al-Ĥaqqu 'Ahwā'ahum Lafasadati As-Samāwātu Wa Al-'Arđu Wa Man Fīhinna Bal 'Ataynāhum Bidhikrihim Fahum `An Dhikrihim Mu`riđūna

Had the truth followed their desires n14 Their desire that the universe has more than one God. See 21:22., the heavens, the earth, and all those in them would have certainly been corrupted. In fact, We have brought them ˹the means to˺ their glory, but they turn away from it.

'Am Tas'aluhum Kharjāan Fakharāju Rabbika Khayrun Wa Huwa Khayru Ar-Rāziqīna

Or ˹is it because˺ you ˹O Prophet˺ are asking them for tribute? But the reward of your Lord is best, for He is the Best Provider.

Wa 'Innaka Latad`ūhum 'Ilá Şirāţin Mustaqīmin

And surely you are calling them to the Straight Path,

    Wa 'Inna Al-Ladhīna Lā Yu'uminūna Bil-'Ākhirati `Ani Aş-Şirāţi Lanākibūna

but those who disbelieve in the Hereafter are certainly deviating from that Path.

Wa Law Raĥimnāhum Wa Kashafnā Mā Bihim Min Đurrin Lalajjū Fī Ţughyānihim Ya`mahūna

˹Even˺ if We had mercy on them and removed their affliction,1 they would still persist in their transgression, wandering blindly.

Wa Laqad 'Akhadhnāhum Bil-`Adhābi Famā Astakānū Lirabbihim Wa Mā Yatađarra`ūna

And We have already seized them with torment, but they never humbled themselves to their Lord, nor did they ˹submissively˺ appeal ˹to Him˺.

Ĥattá 'Idhā Fataĥnā `Alayhim Bābāan Dhā `Adhābin Shadīdin 'Idhā Hum Fīhi Mublisūna

But as soon as We open for them a gate of severe punishment, they will be utterly desperate.

  78. Et c'est Lui qui a créé pour vous l'ouïe, les yeux et les cœurs. Mais vous êtes rarement reconnaissants.

Wa Huwa Al-Ladhī 'Ansha'a Lakumu As-Sam`a Wa Al-'Abşāra Wa Al-'Af'idata Qalīlāan Mā Tashkurūna

He is the One Who created for you hearing, sight, and intellect. ˹Yet˺ you hardly give any thanks.

Wa Huwa Al-Ladhī Dhara'akum Fī Al-'Arđi Wa 'Ilayhi Tuĥsharūna

And He is the One Who has dispersed you ˹all˺ over the earth, and to Him you will ˹all˺ be gathered.

Wa Huwa Al-Ladhī Yuĥyī Wa Yumītu Wa Lahu Akhtilāfu Al-Layli Wa An-Nahāri 'Afalā Ta`qilūna

And He is the One Who gives life and causes death, and to Him belongs the alternation of the day and night. Will you not then understand?

Bal Qālū Mithla Mā Qāla Al-'Awwalūna

But they ˹just˺ say what their predecessors said.

Qālū 'A'idhā Mitnā Wa Kunnā Turābāan Wa `Ižāmāan 'A'innā Lamab`ūthūna

They said, “Once we are dead and reduced to dust and bones, will we really be resurrected?

Laqad Wu`idnā Naĥnu Wa 'Ābā'uunā Hādhā Min Qablu 'In Hādhā 'Illā 'Asāţīru Al-'Awwalīna

We have already been promised this, as well as our forefathers earlier. This is nothing but ancient fables!”

Qul Limani Al-'Arđu Wa Man Fīhā 'In Kuntum Ta`lamūna

Ask ˹them, O Prophet˺, To whom belong the earth and all those on it, if you ˹really˺ know?

  85. Ils diront : A Dieu. Dis : Ne vous souvenez-vous donc pas ?

    Sayaqūlūna Lillāhi Qul 'Afalā Tadhakkarūna

They will reply, “To Allah!” Say, Why are you not then mindful?

    Qul Man Rabbu As-Samāwāti As-Sab`i Wa Rabbu Al-`Arshi Al-`Ažīmi

˹And˺ ask ˹them˺, Who is the Lord of the seven heavens and the Lord of the Mighty Throne?

  87. Ils diront : [ils appartiennent] A Dieu. Dis : Ne craignez-vous donc pas ?

    Sayaqūlūna Lillāhi Qul 'Afalā Tattaqūna

They will reply, Allah. Say, Will you not then fear ˹Him˺?

Qul Man Biyadihi Malakūtu Kulli Shay'in Wa Huwa Yujīru Wa Lā Yujāru `Alayhi 'In Kuntum Ta`lamūn

Ask ˹them also,˺ In Whose Hands is the authority over all things, protecting ˹all˺ while none can protect against Him, if you ˹really˺ know?

  89. Ils diront : Dieu.

    Sayaqūlūna Lillāhi Qul Fa'annā Tusĥarūna

They will reply, Allah. Say, How are you then so deluded?

Bal 'Ataynāhum Bil-Ĥaqqi Wa 'Innahum Lakādhibūna

In fact, We have brought them the truth, and they are certainly liars.

Mā Attakhadha Allāhu Min Waladin Wa Mā Kāna Ma`ahu Min 'Ilahin 'Idhāan Ladhahaba Kullu 'Ilahin Bimā Khalaqa Wa La`alā Ba`đuhum `Alá Ba`đin Subĥāna Allāhi `Ammā Yaşifūna

Allah has never had ˹any˺ offspring, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what he created, and they would have tried to dominate one another. Glorified is Allah above what they claim!

    `Ālimi Al-Ghaybi Wa Ash-Shahādati Fata`ālá `Ammā Yushrikūna

˹He is the˺ Knower of the seen and unseen. Exalted is He above what they associate ˹with Him˺.

  93. Dis : Seigneur, si jamais Tu me montres ce qui leur est promis ;

    قُل رَّبِّ إِمَّا تُرِيَنِّى مَا يُوعَدُونَ

Qul Rabbi 'Immā Turiyannī Mā Yū`adūna

Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ My Lord! Should You show me what they n15The Meccan pagans are threatened with,

    Rabbi Falā Taj`alnī Fī Al-Qawmi Až-Žālimīna

then, my Lord, do not count me among the wrongdoing people.

Wa 'Innā `Alá 'An Nuriyaka Mā Na`iduhum Laqādirūna

We are indeed able to show you what We have threatened them with.

    Idfa` Bi-Atī Hiya 'Aĥsanu As-Sayyi'ata Naĥnu 'A`lamu Bimā Yaşifūna

Respond to evil with what is best. We know well what they claim n16 Their claims that there are many gods, and that the Prophet is a liar, a poet, etc..

Wa Qul Rabbi 'A`ūdhu Bika Min Hamazāti Ash-Shayāţīni

And say, “My Lord! I seek refuge in You from the temptations of the devils.

Wa 'A`ūdhu Bika Rabbi 'An Yaĥđurūni

And I seek refuge in You, my Lord, that they ˹even˺ come near me.”

Ĥattá 'Idhā Jā'a 'Aĥadahumu Al-Mawtu Qāla Rabbi Arji`ūni

When death approaches any of them, they cry, “My Lord! Let me go back,

La`allī 'A`malu Şāliĥāan Fīmā Taraktu Kallā 'Innahā Kalimatun Huwa Qā'iluhā Wa Min Warā'ihim Barzakhun 'Ilá Yawmi Yub`athūna

so I may do good in what I left behind.” Never! It is only a ˹useless˺ appeal they make. And there is a barrier behind them until the Day they are resurrected n17 Meaning, once they are dead, they will never return to the world.

Fa'idhā Nufikha Fī Aş-Şūri Falā 'Ansāba Baynahum Yawma'idhin Wa Lā Yatasā'alūna

Then, when the Trumpet will be blown n18On the Day of Judgment, the Trumpet will be blown by an angel—causing all to die. When it is blown a second time, everyone will be raised from the dead for judgment (see 39:68), there will be no kinship between them on that Day, nor will they ˹even care to˺ ask about one another n19 Everyone will be busy with their own situation.

  102. Ceux dont la balance est lourde seront les bienheureux ;

    فَمَن ثَقُلَتْ مَوَٰزِينُهُۥ فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ

Faman Thaqulat Mawāzīnuhu Fa'ūlā'ika Humu Al-Mufliĥūna

As for those whose scale is heavy ˹with good deeds˺, it is they who will be successful.

Wa Man Khaffat Mawāzīnuhu Fa'ūlā'ika Al-Ladhīna Khasirū 'Anfusahum Fī Jahannama Khālidūna

But those whose scale is light, they will have doomed themselves, staying in Hell forever.

Talfaĥu Wujūhahumu An-Nāru Wa Hum Fīhā Kāliĥūna

The Fire will burn their faces, leaving them deformed.

'Alam Takun 'Āyātī Tutlá `Alaykum Fakuntum Bihā Tukadhibūna

˹It will be said,˺ “Were My revelations not recited to you, but you used to deny them?”

  106. Ils dirent : ‹Seigneur !

Qālū Rabbanā Ghalabat `Alaynā Shiqwatunā Wa Kunnā Qawmāan Đāllīna

They will cry, “Our Lord! Our ill-fate took hold of us, so we became a misguided people.

    Rabbanā 'Akhrijnā Minhā Fa'in `Udnā Fa'innā Žālimūna

Our Lord! Take us out of this ˹Fire˺. Then, if we ever return ˹to denial˺, we will truly be wrongdoers.”

Qāla Akhsa'ū Fīhā Wa Lā Tukallimūni

Allah will respond, Be despised in there! Do not ˹ever˺ plead with Me ˹again˺!

  109. Il y eut un groupe de Mes serviteurs qui dirent : Seigneur, nous croyons ; pardonne-nous donc et fais-nous miséricorde, car Tu es le meilleur des Miséricordieux ;

    إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ فَرِيقٌۭ مِّنْ عِبَادِى يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَآ ءَامَنَّا فَٱغْفِرْ لَنَا وَٱرْحَمْنَا وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ

'Innahu Kāna Farīqun Min `Ibādī Yaqūlūna Rabbanā 'Āmannā Fāghfir Lanā Wa Arĥamnā Wa 'Anta Khayru Ar-Rāĥimīna

Indeed, there was a group of My servants who used to pray, Our Lord! We have believed, so forgive us and have mercy on us, for You are the best of those who show mercy,

Fāttakhadhtumūhum Sikhrīyāan Ĥattá 'Ansawkum Dhikrī Wa Kuntum Minhum Tađĥakūna

but you were ˹so busy˺ making fun of them that it made you forget My remembrance. And you used to laugh at them.

'Innī Jazaytuhumu Al-Yawma Bimā Şabarū 'Annahum Humu Al-Fā'izūna

Today I have indeed rewarded them for their perseverance: they are certainly the triumphant.”

Qāla Kam Labithtum Fī Al-'Arđi `Adada Sinīna

He will ask ˹them˺, How many years did you remain on earth?

Qālū Labithnā Yawmāan 'Aw Ba`đa Yawmin Fās'ali Al-`Āddīna

They will reply, We remained ˹only˺ a day or part of a day.1 But ask those who kept count.

Qāla 'In Labithtum 'Illā Qalīlāan Law 'Annakum Kuntum Ta`lamūna

He will say, You only remained for a little while, if only you knew.

'Afaĥasibtum 'Annamā Khalaqnākum `Abathāan Wa 'Annakum 'Ilaynā Lā Turja`ūna

Did you then think that We had created you without purpose, and that you would never be returned to Us?

    Fata`ālá Allāhu Al-Maliku Al-Ĥaqqu Lā 'Ilāha 'Illā Huwa Rabbu Al-`Arshi Al-Karīmi

Exalted is Allah, the True King! There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him, the Lord of the Honourable Throne.

Wa Man Yad`u Ma`a Allāhi 'Ilahāan 'Ākhara Lā Burhāna Lahu Bihi Fa'innamā Ĥisābuhu `Inda Rabbihi 'Innahu Lā Yufliĥu Al-Kāfirūna

Whoever invokes, besides Allah, another god—for which they can have no proof—they will surely find their penalty with their Lord. Indeed, the disbelievers will never succeed.

  118. Et dis : Seigneur, pardonne et fais miséricorde. C'est Toi le Meilleur des miséricordieux.

Wa Qul Rabbi Aghfir Wa Arĥam Wa 'Anta Khayru Ar-Rāĥimīna

Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ My Lord! Forgive and have mercy, for You are the best of those who show mercy.
